Best Restaurants in Cancún

The best restaurants in Cancún, from Michelin-listed seafood in Puerto Juárez and downtown classics to lagoon-view dinners in the Hotel Zone and taquerías.

Finding the best restaurants in Cancún means leaving the resort buffet at least a few times.

The city sits in the state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatán Peninsula, and its cooking mixes Yucatecan traditions such as cochinita pibil, sopa de lima and achiote-marinated fish with fresh Caribbean seafood and dishes from every corner of Mexico, brought by the people who built the city since 1970.

The food scene has two faces. Along the Hotel Zone, restaurants on the Nichupté lagoon serve lobster, steaks and seafood with sunset views, often at international prices.

Downtown, around Parque de las Palapas, Avenida Tulum and Mercado 28, locals eat at taquerías, family seafood spots and long-standing classics for a fraction of the cost.

In the 2026 Michelin Guide Mexico, two Cancún restaurants are recommended, Kiosco Verde and La Casa de las Mayoras, and Puerto Morelos, half an hour south, has both a starred restaurant and a Bib Gourmand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What food is Cancún known for?

Cancún is known for fresh seafood, from ceviche and aguachile to grilled lobster and whole fish, and for Yucatecan dishes like cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, poc chuc and panuchos. Tacos al pastor, marquesitas and fresh fruit waters are everyday favorites downtown.

Does Cancún have Michelin-starred restaurants?

Not in the city itself. In the 2026 Michelin Guide Mexico, Kiosco Verde and La Casa de las Mayoras in Cancún are recommended restaurants. The nearest starred restaurant is Le Chique in Puerto Morelos, and Punta Corcho, also in Puerto Morelos, holds a Bib Gourmand.

Is it cheaper to eat downtown or in the Hotel Zone?

Downtown is much cheaper. Restaurants in the Hotel Zone, especially on the lagoon, charge international prices, while the taquerías, markets and family restaurants of El Centro serve generous meals for far less. The R-1 and R-2 buses make the trip easy.

Do I need reservations at Cancún restaurants?

For lagoon-view restaurants such as Lorenzillo's, Harry's or Puerto Madero, yes, especially at sunset and in high season. Downtown spots and taquerías rarely take reservations. Kiosco Verde and La Casa de las Mayoras get busy, so arrive early.

How much should I tip at restaurants in Cancún?

A tip of 10 to 15 percent is customary in Mexico for table service, and up to 20 percent for excellent service in upscale restaurants. Check the bill first, as some places in the Hotel Zone add a service charge.

Is it safe to eat street food in Cancún?

Generally yes, if you choose busy stands with high turnover, where food is cooked in front of you. Drink bottled or purified water, avoid ice from unknown sources and go easy on raw seafood on your first days.
