Five Days in London: Icons, Museums & Neighbourhoods

Five days is enough to see London's icons and still explore the neighbourhoods locals love. The first three days mirror a strong long-weekend plan: the Thames and Westminster, the South Kensington museums, and the creative East End. Days four and five then push southeast to Greenwich's maritime museums and Royal Observatory, and north to Lord's, Regent's Park, and the West End. Along the way you'll sample fish and chips, salt beef bagels, Brick Lane curry, and celebrated neighbourhood restaurants. Each day stays geographically focused to limit transit time, and the variety, museums, parks, architecture, sport, and food, captures the full breadth of the city.

5 days

Day 01

Westminster, the Thames & Skyline

Royal parks, the National Gallery, a river cruise, and The Shard.

  1. Morning

St James's Park & Buckingham Palace

Start in St James's Park, with its pelicans and lake views toward Buckingham Palace, while the paths are still quiet. It's the ideal orientation point for a first full day in central London.

  2. Late Morning

    National Gallery

Devote two hours to the Impressionists, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Turner's seascapes in one of the world's finest collections, a short walk up to Trafalgar Square from the park.

  3. Lunch

    South Bank riverside

Cross the river for lunch along the South Bank, with the boat traffic and bridges beside you, a scenic pause before the afternoon cruise sets off from a nearby pier.

  4. Afternoon

    Thames River Cruise

Take a sightseeing cruise from Westminster Pier for the definitive river primer, gliding past the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, and Tower Bridge.

  5. Late Afternoon

    The View from The Shard

Ascend to the 72nd-floor viewing gallery of The Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe. Late-day light and clear skies reward you with sweeping views across the whole city.

  6. Evening

    Fish and chips dinner

Close the day with London's classic fish and chips at Poppies or The Golden Hind, a proper battered cod or haddock with mushy peas.

Day 02

Museum Quarter & Hyde Park

The Natural History, Science, and V&A museums plus Kensington Gardens.

  1. Morning

    Natural History Museum

Begin with the dinosaur gallery and Hope, the blue whale skeleton hanging in Hintze Hall. Arriving at opening helps you outpace the day's school groups.

  2. Late Morning

    Science Museum

Move next door to the Science Museum for the space rockets, the Wonderlab galleries, and Stephenson's Rocket. A booked entry slot keeps waits short.

  3. Lunch

    Kensington Gardens

Enjoy a casual or picnic lunch on the lawns of Kensington Gardens, framed by the Round Pond on one side and the Albert Memorial on the other.

  4. Afternoon

    Victoria and Albert Museum

Walk to the V&A for its unmatched galleries of design, fashion, sculpture, and the serene garden courtyard at its heart.

  5. Late Afternoon

    The Serpentine

Stroll north to the Serpentine, the lake curving through Hyde Park, where you can hire a rowing boat or walk the banks in the warmer months.

  6. Evening

    Kensington dinner

Dine around South Kensington and Kensington High Street, whose restaurants cover everything from Persian and Lebanese cooking to modern British cuisine.

Canal walks, street art, markets, and celebrated independent dining in East London.

Walk or cycle the Regent's Canal towpath through Hackney toward Broadway Market, a green ribbon of narrowboats and waterside cafés threading the neighbourhood.

  2. Late Morning

    Shoreditch street art & boutiques

Explore the murals, independent shops, record stores, and vintage clothing around Redchurch Street, Cheshire Street, and Brick Lane, plus the works tucked down nearby side streets.

    Beigel Bake, Brick Lane

Settle in for a salt beef bagel at the 24-hour Beigel Bake, or choose from Brick Lane's many acclaimed curry houses and casual eateries.

  4. Afternoon

    Broadway Market & London Fields

Wander east to Broadway Market's food and design stalls, then relax in adjoining London Fields, a stylish, unhurried afternoon of browsing.

  5. Evening

    Shoreditch dinner

Head back into Shoreditch for dinner around Boxpark and Rivington Street, home to some of London's most lauded independent restaurants.

  6. Evening

    Cocktail bar nightcap

Finish with a drink at one of Shoreditch's inventive cocktail bars, soaking up the neighbourhood's easygoing creative vibe.

Day 04

Greenwich & the Maritime South

A tea clipper, a maritime museum, an observatory, and Wren's baroque architecture.

  1. Morning

Cutty Sark & National Maritime Museum

Spend the morning aboard the Cutty Sark tea clipper and in the free National Maritime Museum next door, exploring Nelson, exploration, and the golden age of sail, a highlight for all ages.

    Greenwich Market cafés

Grab lunch in and around Greenwich Market, where street food stalls, bakeries, and independent cafés line the covered arcades and nearby streets.

  5. Evening

Pause at the top of Greenwich Park for a peaceful view across the river to Canary Wharf and the City skyline before heading back.

  6. Evening

    Greenwich dinner

Have dinner among the pubs and restaurants around Greenwich town centre, from riverside gastropubs to modern British tables, before returning north for the evening.

Day 05

St John's Wood, Regent's Park & the West End

Cricket at Lord's, Regent's Park and the zoo, and West End shopping to close the trip.

  1. Morning

    Lord's Cricket Ground

Visit Lord's, the home of cricket on this site since 1814. Take a ground tour of the pavilion and MCC Museum, or catch a match if the schedule aligns with your trip.
